Two good “Bluenoses” are shown here on the stamping ground of the well known “Bluenose” squadron of the RCAF Bomber Group in England . They are Air Marshall H. Edwards, C.B. , A.O.C. in C. of the R.C.A.F. Overseas and Wing Commander C.E. Harris , Annapolis Royal , N.S. , Commanding officer of the “Bluenose squadron”. Air Marshall Harris , who comes from the Maritimes, spoke to the officers and men of the “Bluenose” squadron and told of the high hopes that were held for the newly named outfit. He brought them a message of “Good Luck” from himself and “Great Praise” from Canada .

Talking things over with the “Wingco” is Flight Lieutenant Murray Flewelling (Left) of Calgary , Alta . As recently as last November he was a Sgt/Pilot, but in four months has been commissioned, promoted to Flight Lieutenant and appointed to the post of Deputy Flight Commander.

Now 25 F/L Flewelling has more than half completed his operational tour and is one of the “originals” of 434 Squadron. To the right of Murray is Wing Commander Chris Bartlett , D.F.C., the squadron commander is from Fort Q’Appelle, Sask.

Pilot F/L M. Flewelling and his crew encountered flak on 28/29 Jan. 1944 on an "Op" to Berlin P/O J. Demers was killed.

W/C C. Bartlett and his crew "FTR" from Arras France on 13 June 1944. Six were killed and F/Lt. D.H. Crawford became a POW.

This crew encountered flak on a raid to Berlin 29/30 Dec. 1943. The aircraft returned safely however Sgt A. Bostock was fatally wounded with a piece of shrapnel to the chest (also see photo in "Airfield Activity" - Wings Abroad/Crew 8)

Some crews took longer to get home for debriefing than others. Crew #52 ditched their Halifax in the North Sea while returning home from a raid on Leipzig. Rescued by the navy, they were given dry rubber boots, old flannel slacks and sweaters. After three days they made it back to Tholthorpe, rumpled and weary, but not looking much like the "pirates, thugs, and brigands" that Lord Haw Haw described as belonging to the squadron.

On 16/17 June 1944 this crew (minus F/O L. Shaw) flying a Halifax III, serial # LK-792, coded WL-N, on a bombing raid to Sterkrade would "FTR" all were killed.

On the night of 22 Nov. 1943 Pilot Tedford and crew flew to Berlin Germany, unfortunately they could not defy the odds and all were killed on thier first mission.

Note: Due to illness on the night of 18/19 Nov. 1943, F/E Sgt. N.G. Speight did not fly with his crew (Pilot K.C. Smith - crew 41), Sgt. Harry Turner filled the vacancy, they FTR and Harry became a POW.

Days later on the 22 Nov. Sgt. N.G. Speight replaced Sgt. Harry Turner for the Tedford crew.
